Game Developer
Job description
Game developers are software engineers that are responsible for the production of video games for computers and video game consoles. They must be proficient in writing code because they are equipped with the task to turn ideas into reality. C++ and Java are some of the programming languages used to generate the virtual worlds in video games which can only be achieved with an extensive understanding of physics. A bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, and computer information systems are preferred although the ability to use programming languages properly and efficiently is the primary requirement.
Some of the duties of a game developer include:
• Creating storylines and character biographies
• Conducting design reviews
• Designing role-play mechanics
• Creating prototypes for staff and management
• Documenting game design process
Units: Dynamics + Energy & Momentum
Game developers must have a profound understanding of dynamics, energy, and momentum to simulate the virtual worlds in video games. They must use kinematics and forces to implement game mechanics that are responsible for the movement of the objects. Even a simple game such as “Flappy Bird” uses the concepts of kinematics to calculate the acceleration, velocity, and the position of the bird using real-time calculations. Game developers use what is known as a “velocity verlet” or “Euler’s method” integration to calculate velocity, acceleration, and position through calculus and the five equations of motion. The game “Angry Birds” uses a similar approach to calculate the range and the height at which the birds land using the principles of projectile motion. Kinematics can help create necessary movement in video games, but modeling the forces will allow the game to operate realistically. Making a ball fall from the sky to the ground is easy by using a velocity verlet, however, simulating terminal velocity can be difficult without the understanding of forces. And so game developers use weight force, spring force, viscous damping force, and frictional forces including air drag in combinations with one another to create realistic game environments. A game such as “Grand Theft Auto” which is based on realism can use these various forces to create environments and scenarios that are very similar to those that can occur in real life. For example, it can use gravity, friction, drag, and centripetal forces to allow a race car to move inside the virtual game world.

Computer Hardware Engineer
Job Description
Computer hardware engineers are engineers that research, design, develop, and test computer systems and components such as processors, circuit boards, memory devices, networks, routers, and related equipment, such as keyboards, modems, and printers. Research, development, and design efforts of these engineers is the reason for the rapid advances in computer technology today. Most entry-level computer hardware engineers require a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer hardware engineering, or computer science.
Some of the duties of a computer hardware engineer include:
• Designing new computer hardware, creating schematics of computer equipment to be built
• Testing the completed models of the computer hardware they design
• Analyzing the test results and modifying the design as needed
• Updating existing computer equipment so that it will work with new software
• Overseeing the manufacturing process for computer hardware
• Maintaining knowledge of computer engineering trends and new technology

Units: Electricity & Magnetism + Wave nature of light
Computer hardware engineers must understand electricity and magnetism to design components of computers. They are often equipped with the task to create schematics of computer equipment to be built which can only be achieved by understanding how electricity and circuits work. These engineers must know the fundamentals of how a storage device is made and operates to create storage devices like hard drives. They must realize that a circular plate, called a “platter,” is the magnetic material divided into billions of tiny areas which can be magnetized or demagnetized to read, write, or store any data. Similarly, since hardware engineers develop colour printers which create photograph-quality prints, they should know that a printer works by static electricity in which accelerated ink particles travel through an electrode and deflection plates to place ink on the paper. Computer hardware engineers are also responsible for researching and developing the most powerful CPUs and GPUs. To research and develop the fastest and most effective CPUs and GPUs, these engineers create schematics by using their understanding of electricity and circuits. Also, these engineers are the reason self-driving cars exist today. They produce the CPUs for the cars, which contains complicated sets of instructions to calculate the steps needed to avoid collisions and drive safely, all by understanding forces, kinematics, energy and momentum principles, etc.
