Sambo, also known as Sombo, is a Martial Arts style developed in Russia.
According to American Sambo Association, Sambo is an acronym for "self-defense without weapons".

In 1968, the FILA accepted Sambo as the third style of international wrestling. In 1985, the Sambo community formed its own organization, Federation International Amateur Sambo (FIAS). In 1993, FIAS split into two organizations, both of which used the same name and logo and the two groups were often referred to as FIAS "East" (under Russian control) and FIAS "West" (under US and Western European control).
Sambo is of two main styles, Combat Sambo and Sports Sambo. Combat Sambo is similar to Mixed Martial Arts and involves kicks, punches, wrestling, grappling and joint locks. Sports Sambo is more like Wrestling and Judo. Similar to wrestling, a Sambo practitioner normally wears either a red or a blue competition outfit. Like all fighting systems, Sambo continues to grow and evolve in both its sport and combat variants.

FIAS submitted an application to the International Olympic Committee to consider Sambo for the 2020 Games. This will reestablish the global popularity and media emphasis on SAMBO.
