Dear Edith SeVille Coale Medical Scholarship Selection Committee,

Carolyn Mulvey is well on her way towards becoming a leader in academic medicine. I say this with the utmost confidence as I have grown to know her as her Faculty Advisor during her first 2 years of medical school. I have served at Johns Hopkins since I entered as a medical student some 22 years ago and I have known many students throughout those years. Carolyn is one of the most earnest and hardworking students I have ever encountered. Thus, it is my pleasure to write this letter and give Carolyn my highest recommendation in support of her application for this scholarship opportunity.

I first met Carolyn on her first day of medical school. I have also known her as a student in our course, “Clinical Foundations of Medicine (CFM)”. Our CFM course is particularly focused on communication and interpersonal skill development and is taught in a small group that requires preparation and collaboration. On all counts Carolyn was a marvelous student.

Importantly, Carolyn is poised to meet the ZONTA goal of “advancing the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy”. A quick glance at her resume confirms a deep commitment to helping others and improving the world around her. Notably she has distinguished herself with great success performing research in plastic and reconstructive surgery with a recent publication in a peer-reviewed journal and speaking opportunities across the country; a particularly remarkable accomplishment given the demands of our rigorous curriculum. It should be noted that only approximately 12% of full-time faculty in plastic surgery were female and plastic surgery represents a medical field in particular need of female leadership. In addition to these accomplishments she has been able to serve and tutor local children through her volunteer activities in Baltimore City. These achievements speak volumes about her fortitude and industrious spirit and will serve her well as she looks to serve others.

The mission of our school of medicine is to produce leaders in Medicine who will take the foundation of a broad education to improve health locally and across the globe. In this regard Carolyn has begun to distinguish herself as a leader.

In summary, Carolyn possesses all the attributes requisite for a great student and future leader. She is a mature and thoughtful medical student with great potential to leave her mark upon medicine. Her academic performance to date at Johns Hopkins has been outstanding. I highly recommend Megan as an outstanding, well-rounded and well prepared applicant for consideration of your scholarship.

Respectfully submitted,
