Mereka tinggal di dasar danau yang ada di Britania Raya dan Irlandia. Sekalipum grindylow kecil, jarinya panjang dan kelihatannya mudah untuk dipatahkan, tapi tenaganya sangat kuat. Mereka juga sangat agresif terhadap penyihir dan Muggle. Mereka hanya bisa dijinakkan oleh Merpeople, yang terkadang memelihara Grindylow sebagai peliharaan.
Cara lepas dari cekikan mereka adalah berusaha untuk "mematahkan" cengkraman itu atau bisa jg menggunakan Relashio yang berguna untuk memaksa Grindylow melepaskan cengkraman mereka.
Dalam air, mantra tersebut akan menyebabkan pancaran air panas yang mengarah ke Grindylow yang menjadi target kalian.
Grindylow ini biasanya memakan ikan, alga dan hewan laut kecil. Akan tetapi, mereka terkadang juga bisa memakan manusia. Oleh karena itulah Grindylow termasuk sebagai salah satu Dark Creatures
