العلم الحالي للجمهورية العربية السورية وهو نفس علم الجمهورية العربية المتحدة، اتخذ بعد تعديل المادة السادسة من دستور عام 1973م بالقانون رقم 2 تاريخ 29/3/1980م المنشور في الجريدة الرسمية الجزء 1 العدد 14 لسنة 1980م.
في 3/4/1980 صدر القانون رقم 25 المحدد لأوصاف العلم الوطني للجمهورية العربية السورية ونشر في الجريدة الرسمية العدد 15 (الجزء الأول) لسنة 1980 الصفحة 601 ونصه كالتالي:
ـ يتألف علم الجمهورية العربية السورية من ثلاثة ألوان: الأسود والأبيض والأحمر، وبه نجمتاه كل منها ذات خمس شعب لونها أخضر، ويكون العلم مستطيل الشكل، عرضه ثلثا طوله، يتكون من ثلاثة مستطيلات متساوية الأبعاد بطول العلم، أعلاها الأحمر، وأوسطها باللون الأبيض، وثلثها باللون الأسود، وتتوسط النجمتان المستطيل الأبيض.
مدلولات العلم: تأكيداً على الوحدة العربية الكبرى التي هي هدف كل عربي.
يمثل الوحدة بين مصر وسورية، وترمز فيه النجمتان إلى الإقليمين الشمالي «سورية» والجنوبي «مصر»،
