karikatur berasal dari italia pada abad 16 dan pd abad 18 karikatur sudah mulai terkenal dan dipakai sebagai sarana kritik politik dan sosial. Pada abad 20 karikatur sudah di muat di koran.<br>

Carracci bersaudara diyakini sebagai seniman-seniman pertama yang terkenal akan karikatur mereka, dan Annibale diyakini sebagai orang pertama yang menggunakan istilah ritrattini carichi (potret yang dilebih lebihkan).<br>
