Drawing from sociological perspectives, respond to the following prompt: In “Public Goods, Private Goods”, historian David Labaree asserts: “Schools, it seems, occupy an awkward position at the intersection between what we hope society will become and what we think it really is, between political ideals and economic realities.” Is Labaree correct? Why or why not? State your argument and provide evidence from course readings and additional research to support your claims.

INSTRUCTIONS

CONTENT: Responses should have a clear thesis (i.e., your argument), apply key sociological theories and concepts, and synthesize evidence from empirical studies and theoretical texts to support claims. Responses must also address counterarguments. Be sure to bold and underline your central argument.

FORMAT: Responses should be 4 double-spaced pages (1-inch margins). Include a header with your name, course number/section, and “FINAL”. Responses should explicitly reference course readings and cite all sources according to the American Psychological Association (APA) citation and format style. Papers without in-text citations and/or reference lists will be penalized. Responses may include only one additional direct quote (which does not exceed 50 words).

SUBMISSION: Exams must be submitted electronically to Blackboard by 11:59 PM ON DECEMBER 14TH. I encourage you to give yourself sufficient time to resolve unexpected complications (e.g., internet connection issues, Blackboard problems, etc.).
