Elon Musk founded in 2002. goal was making humans multiplanetary and evolving space technology. Would've launched to venus but venus is a high-pressure 'acid pool'. Mercury is way too close to the sun. Moon is smaller than a planet. No atmosphere. Not as resource rich. So mars is better, has liquid, a small bit colder... But spacesuits now have heaters, grow plants, and has the nitrogen for plants, last, only half an hour more than a day. Sadly it MIGHT be a bit more expensive... 10 billion dollars/person. Courtesy of www.spacex.com/mars, SpaceX wants to have 100 people blast off to mars on the Interplanetary Transport System (ITS). They will launch on the Apollo 11 launch pad carrying an estimate of 28,730,000 lbs. From the first launch it will take 40 to 100 years to sustain a full civilization (1 million people). The ITS will probably go around 8 1/2 thousand kilometers an hour and it plans to have 450 tons of cargo launched at that speed. It has a heat shield which blocks some heat from getting into the ship causing it errors, think of it like a big fat brake pad.
