AWA essay structure:
- Intro: short and sweet, have a main thesis
- Body: 2-3 paragraphs, be analytical and persuade what's in the introduction, most important part
- Conclusion: need to have one, should be longer than 1 sentence, restate what I discussed, don't add anything new
AWA time management:
- brainstorm and outline (3 minutes), don't just write because essay will break down
- write intro & thesis statement (3 minutes)
- write the body & examples (20 minutes)
- write the conclusion (2 minutes), should reword the thesis statement
- edit everything
Issue Essay
- agree or disagree and support my position
- be sure to say how the other side is also valid in some cases (called a concession point)
- gre.org has a pool of sample issue questions
- intro: work up to the thesis, then finish with a short & sweet thesis that reflects the side I choose
- body: next 2 paragraphs, choose the most persuasive points, 1 point per paragraph with examples and being very specific to be most persuasive
- concession point: comes after the 2 supporting points
- conclusion: restate thesis & body, don't add any new information
Argument Essay
- gre.org has a pool of examples for this essay as well
- examples of logical fallacies: things change, assumed cause & effect, miscalculations, vague terminology, similar is not identical, survey results are not evidence, different things can work in different ways
- intro: "This argument is flawed for numerous reasons."
- body: focus on 3 logical fallacies, 1 fallacy per paragraph, end each paragraph on how the argument could be strengthened in terms of the point in question
- conclusion: short & sweet, shouldn't have to be longer than 2 sentences
