Kata 'Inferius' merupakan Bahasa Latin bagi 'bawah' dan 'Inferus' yang berarti 'yang mati, alam barzakh.' Inferius adalah mayat yang dihidupkan kembali oleh penyihir hitam dengan menggunakan sihir hitam yang disebut Necromancy. Jika di dunia Muggle, maka Inferius ini mirip dengan zombie.
Di tahun 1899, disebutkan bahwa salah satu penyihir hitam bernama Gellert Grindelward membuat pasukan Inferius. Selama perang dunia sihir pertama, Lord Voldemort diketahui membuat pasukan Inferius dari ratusan korban yang dibunuhnya. Para Inferius itu biasanya adalah muggle yang dibunuh oleh Voldemort namun ada beberapa yang merupakan penyihir yang dikabarkan menghilang tanpa kabar.
Karena jasad yang terkena Inferius adalah makhluk kegelapan, maka mereka tidak menyukai cahaya dan kilatan. Mantra yang paling berguna bagi mereka adalah mantra dengan elemen api seperti Incendio atau Lacarnum Inflamarae. Mantra lain hanya memberikan dampak kecil terhadap Inferius. Inferius mampu bertahan terhadap mantra lain karena mereka tidak akan merasa kesakitan dan mampu bertahan terhadap mantra fisik.
