Intro - Kant is a enlightenment philosopher (ethics without need for God), diff to natural law. He puts a large emphasis that humans are rational beings and have an innate ability in knowing what is right or wrong. The theory is deontological and absolute as it says we have to use act according to our duty without looking at the sitatuon

Reason - innante intelelctual power which helps us know what is right or wrong.
-pure (concerned with knowledge) and practical (what should be done) reason
-Through reason we understand the universal moral law (in built law)
-Quote: awe of starry heavens above and moral law within

Univerasal Moral Law lets us know what our duty is
Duty - only reason as to why we should act morally.
-Good will - acting out of your duty
-Good will shines forth like a precious jewel
Summum Bonum - acting purely out of duty leads to this place in afterlife
Only in after life as good people are rewarded there only
(place where happiness and virtue are together)
morality inevitably leads to God
Everyone can achieve it ----Ought implies can - an obligation to do something implies the possibility that the goal can be achieved, otherwise there can be no obligation. It has to be possible. If you ought to do something you must be able to do it.

CI - Categorical Imperatives - rules which are issued by the UML.
-Commands must be obeyed for it's own sake and not for any other motive.
E.g. do not murder.
CI uses autonomous will (free from external factors and uses duty alone).
3 principles to follow:
1)P.O.U. 2) Treat others as ends. 3) Live in a kingdom of ends
Different to Hypothetical imperatives which use heteronomous will
-to get to y we must first do x.
e.g. to get to heaven we must follow religious law

Moral statements - Analytics ( neccesarily true, true by definition), Synthetic (may also require testing)
A priori Synthetic - can prove logic via experience. ----C.I's

Normal statements - A priori Analytic ---- know things by their definition - E.G. Maths
