Ngày xưa, Vua Hùng Vương thứ 18 có nuôi một đứa trẻ, đặt tên là An Tiem. Lớn lên An Tiêm cưới vợ và được vua tin cậy. Nhưng An Tiem kiêu căng cho rằng mình tài giỏi, chứ không cần ai. Vua cho An Tiêm là kẻ vong ơn, nên đuổi An Tiêm ra đảo . Hai vợ chồng An Tiêm cùng đứa con cũng bị đày. Họ ra sức khai khẩn, trồng trọt để sống. Một ngày kia, có một con chim lạ từ phương Tây bay đến nhả mấy hạt gì xuống đất. Sau đó cây nở hoa, kết thành trái to. Rồi An Tiêm hái thử, thấy vỏ xanh, ruột đỏ, hột đen, mùi vị thơm và ngon ngọt, mát dịu nên gieo trồng khắp nơi. Vài tháng sau, có một chiếc thuyền bị bão dạt vào đảo. Mọi người lên đảo, thấy có nhiều quả lạ, ngon. Họ đua nhau đổi thực phẩm cho gia đình An Tiêm. Rồi từ đó, mọi người tìm đến đảo. Các tàu buôn tấp nập ghé đến đổi mọi thứ lấy dưa dấu của An Tiêm và gia đình của An Tiêm trở nên đầy đủ hơn. An Tiêm đặt tên cho nó là Dưa Hấu. Ít lâu sau, vua sai người ra đảo xem gia đình An Tiêm ra làm sao. Lính về kể lại cảnh sống sung túc của An Tiêm, nhà vua ngẫm nghĩ lại, bèn cho An Tiêm về nước. An Tiêm đem về dâng cho vua giống dưa hấu. Rồi phân phát hột dưa cho dân chúng trồng làm giàu thêm cho xứ Việt một thứ trái cây danh tiếng.
