Peki Meşe Nedir?

Dünya üzerinde geniş bir yayılış sahası vardır. 25 m. boya ve 2 m. gövde çapına erişebilen geniş tepeli ağaçlardan, 3–5 m. boya sahip çalılara kadar değişen türleri vardır. Bu bitkilerin gövdeleri düzgün, kabuk önceleri düzgün, sonraları kalın ve yırtılmış durumda olup, esmer renktedir. Kökleri yanlara ve derinlere çok gider. Yaprakları da formları gibi değişkenlik gösterebilir, loplu, dişli ya da düz kenarlıdır. "Palamut" adı verilen silindirik meyveleri bir kadeh içinde yer alır. Bazı türlerinin palamudu büyük ve tırnaklı olur.
Tanen bakımından zengin olan bu tür palamudun şırası sepicilikte ve boya sanayiinde kullanılır. İçinde pelit denilen tohumu vardır. Pelit doku bakımından kestaneye benzer. Ancak, tadı acı olduğu için hayvan yemi olarak değerlendirilir. Meşe, alakarga ve sincabın kışın yemek için toprağa gömdüğü ya da kendiliğinden toprağa karışan pelitlerden ürer.
