In 1491, Copernicus was 18. He began as an undergraduate at the University of Krakow. He studied astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, and the sciences. His main interest was astronomy. It was reflected in the books he bought:
• Elements of Geometry by Euclid
• In Judgment of the Stars by Haly Abenragel
• Astronomical Tables by Alfonso X of Castile
• Astronomical and Mathematical Tables by Johannes Regiomontanus
In his final year at university, Copernicus wrote his own observations on mathematics and astronomy. These he inserted into his personal copy of Johannes Regiomontanus’s book.
After 4 years at the university, Copernicus didn't get a degree, so his uncle sent him to Bologna, Italy, to study canon law, hoping Copernicus would become a canon. He didn't study much about laws there. Instead, Copernicus lived in the same house as the principal astronomer at the university, Domenico Maria de Novara, doing research and helping him make observations of the heaven (sky).
