KRIPTOLOGI
Kriptologi adalah ilmu yang mempelajari tentang sandi atau kode-kode rahasia. Istilah sandi telah mulai dipakai sejak masa kerajaan-kerajaan di tanah air dulu, seperti Kerajaan Majapahit. Saat itu, telah muncul istilah 'Telik Sandi', 'Candra Sengkala' dan lainnya yang sedikit banyak mempunyai hubungan dengan persandian. Sebenarnya sejak manusia berkomunikasi satu sama lain dan ada hasrat atau kepentingan untuk merahasiakan pembicaraannya. Sejak itulah baik disadari maupun tidak disadari mereka telah mempergunakan persandian. Mereka akan berusaha mencari jalan dan cara bagaimana merahasiakan sesuatu terhadap pihak yang mereka anggap tidak berhak mengetahui. Kata sandi berasal dari bahasa sansekerta yaitu 'sandhi' yang memiliki arti perubahan huruf-huruf yang terjadi bila dua kata atau lebih dipersatukan.
Kriptologi sendiri berasal dari bahasa yunani, kriptos artinya tersembunyi (rahasia) dan logos artinya ilmu pengetahuan. Ilmu persandian ini dibedakan menjadi 2 kelompok dasar, yang pertama Sistem Steganografi. Sistem steganografi adalah menyembunyikan berita, dengan tanda tertentu di dalam teks berita lain, 'dihilangkan' dengan tinta rahasia dan lain sebagainya. Sistem Kriptografik adalah meliputi sistem-sistem yang mengolah tata tulisan dalam berita sehingga menjadi tata tulisan yang berlainan dan tidak bermakna.
