The ash was 4 times deeper in Herculaneum. Took only 24 hours to be covered. 25 metres of solid rock. Well preserved. Difficult to excavate.
The coast has been pushed 400 metres out to sea.
Vast sample of casts found together, out near the shore, in vaults. A majority were women and children, 340 skeletons recovered.
Close to 10% of the population found in Herculaneum were found in these vaults.
If there's a house, made of wood. Likely to come from Herculaneum.
Household shrines, contained household gods.
Colour was seen as extraordinary in the archaeologist's perspective. Chemical analysis allows for digital reconstructions (3D imaging) of artefacts that have lost colour.
Amphorae, big containers that contain wine, maybe marinated veg, used in shops to store.
Organic Material from the Sewer reveals 110 different food items, 46 different types of fish (anchovies, 3 different types of eels, sharks & rays), found in the sewage of Herculaneum, this is in working class/everyday people area.
Poorer people, had more protein in their diet.
Otolith indicating the part or whole of the fish being digested.
Herculaneum is known for it's figs.
