CISC ย่อมาจาก Complex Instruction Set Computer คือ CPU ที่เวลาเราป้อนคำสั่งไป 1 คำสั่ง มันสามารถทำงานได้หลายอย่าง ตัวอย่าง CPU ที่เป็นแบบ CISC ก็คือ CPU ของ Intel ทั้งหมดที่ใช้สถาปัตยกรรมแบบ x86
RISC คือ Reduced Instruction Set Computer เป็น CPU ที่เกิดขึ้นภายหลัง โดยการออกแบบนั้นจะเน้นที่การลดจำนวนชุดคำสั่งลง คำสั่งแต่ละคำสั่งทำงานได้ 1 อย่างเท่านั้น CPU แบบ RISC สามารถออกแบบได้ง่ายขึ้น เลยเป็นผลทำให้ RISC กินไฟน้อยและมีขนาดเล็ก
X86 เป็นชื่อของสถาปัตยกรรมคอมพิวเตอร์สำหรับไมโครโปรเซสเซอร์ (CPU) ของIntel ตั้งแต่ปี 1980 เหตุที่เรียกว่า X86ก็เพราะชื่อเรียกของไมโครโปรเซสเซอร์ยุคอดีตกาลหลายๆตัวนั้นลงท้ายด้วย”86”ได้แก่ 8086 ,80186 ,80286,386,486แต่ชื่อที่เป็นตัวเลขแบบนี้ไม่สามารถนำไปใช้จดเครื่องหมายการค้าได้ไมโครโปรเซสเซอร์ 80586 จึงได้ใช้ชื่อว่า”Pentium” ดังนั้น “สถาปัตยกรรมX86” ก็คือ ชื่อเรียกวิธีการออกแบบCPUแบบหนึ่งที่นิยมใช้กันแพร่หลายนั่นเอง
ARM ทำการออกแบบ CPU โดยใช้สถาปัตยกรรม RISC เป็นหลักด้วยความที่ ARM CPU เป็น CPU ที่กินไฟน้อย จึงทำให้มันโด่งดังในตลาดอุปกรณ์เคลื่อนที่ต่างๆARM CPU นั้นถูกพัฒนาโดยบริษัทชื่อว่า ARM (บริษัทแม่อยู่ที่อังกฤษ) ที่ทำการพัฒนาและออกแบบ CPU อย่างเดียว ไม่ได้ทำการผลิตเอง แต่จะถ่ายทอดสถาปัตยกรรม ARM CPU และขายใบอนุญาติใช้สิทธิบัตรไปยังบริษัทอื่นๆ เช่น Apple, Intel, LG, Marvell Technology Group, Microsoft, Nintendo, Nvidia, Sony, NXP, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sharp, Texas Instrument
