1. Flintlock

Pistol dengan mekanisme filntlock.
Cara kerjanya sangat sederhana, ketika pelatuk ditarik, percikan api akan muncul dan meledakkan bubuk mesiu.

2. Revolver

Revolver, sesuai arti katanya yaitu 'berputar' (revolve), menggunakan silinder berputar yang berisikan kamar peluru. Silinder ini berisikan lima sampai sembilan peluru, sesuai besar revolver dan jenis peluru yang dipakai. Setelah ditembakkan, tergantung dari mekanismenya, silinder dapat langsung berputar, atau harus diputar secara manual dengan cara menarik hammer menggunakan jempol.

3. Pistol semi otomatis

Pistol semi-otomatis modern menggunakan magazen untuk menyimpan pelurunya. Pistol ini sudah menggantikan pistol revolver dalam pemakaiannya pada militer dan kepolisian modern. Pistol semi-otomatis memiliki kapasitas ruang peluru yang besar, sampai 20 butir pada tipe-tipe tertentu.

4. Pistol otomatis

Pistol otomatis atau istilah lainnya pistol mesin (machine pistol), adalah pistol yang memiliki kemampuan menembak sepenuhnya otomatis.
