This generation has become very dependent on technology. Standardized tests such as the ACT's SAT's and the AP's, College Apps require you to use their web portals to register for tests or to submit an Application. As a result of this, there has been a spike in the sales of tablet computers like iPads and/or Personal Computers such as the MacBooks. This spike has also led to an increase in inferiority amongst the students who cannot afford such computers. Thus, students having technological devices, would allow every student to have the same advantage as their peers while also not making anyone feel inferior and/or left behind to struggle, and allowing everyone around the world to access this wealth of information on the web.
Since the boom of internet in the late 90’s and early 2000s, many companies started using the internet as their primary communication source to their customers because of the ease to connect to the whole world without much trouble. This led the internet to become the primary source of communication and the first thing that anyone goes to in order to look for answers. Because of this, many government agencies have started to switch to internet communication/bookings as well, many school services were a part of this as well. A major problem with this change was that every person had to have at least one internet connectible device in their household in order to be able to do normal things. Although prices of such smart technological devices have fallen, they are still expensive to most families. Hence, students having access to technological devices, not only gives them access those services.
At the same time, due to every major company using the web as their communication tool to customers, a lot of information from around the world has been published on the web most of it freely available to view. By having access to a technological device, students can view that information and learn from them, potentially allowing them to find the things that they like, or finding help in things that they are struggling about and cannot find help at the situation they are in, etc. Students can also research on many topics allowing them to discover new things about the world, while having points of view from all sides to all issues.
However, although students having access to the internet with smart devices and/or laptops have a lot of advantages such as being able to access government websites, registering standardized tests, viewing a lot of information around the world, etc. It also poses a great threat, as such devices give students access to the bad parts of technologies such as social networking and games. According to an adaptation from n article written by Susan Parker in the New York Times newspaper, “Students who gain access to a home computer between the 5th and 8th grades tend to witness a persistent decline in reading and math scores”. This would defeat the purpose of students having technology. Although students having access to such technology is posing a great threat, well maintained regulation of such devices by parents and school faculty would allow the students to be able to use such technology in the right way.
In conclusion, Although using technology poses a threat by giving students access to a bad part of technology, proper regulation of it by parents and school faculty would allow the student in being able to only access the positive parts such as being able to access the worlds knowledge as well as many useful and necessary services from that technological device.
