Harddisk เป็นอุปกรณ์ที่ทำหน้าที่จัดเก็บข้อมูลสำรอง ใช้วิธีการเข้าถึงแบบสุ่ม (Random Access)
ต่างจากRam ที่สามารถเข้าถึงข้อมูลทุกตัวได้ด้วยความเร็วเท่ากัน
การเข้าถึงข้อมูลharddisk ขึ้นอยู่กับ ตำแหน่งของหัวอ่าน-เขียน ข้อมูลจะถูกบันทึกลงในPlatter
Harddiskสามารถมี Platterมากกว่า 1 อัน เชื่อมต่อกันด้วยSpindle เพื่ออ่านหรือเขียนข้อมูล แต่ละplatter จะมีหัวอ่านแยกออกจากกัน หากharddiskมี 5 platter จะต้องมีหัวอ่าน 10 หัวเนื่องจากแต่ละplatterบันทึกข้อมูลได้ 2 ด้านนั่นเอง
Platter แบ่งพื้นผิวออกเป็นวงซ้อนกัน เรียกว่า Track และแต่ละ Track จะประกอบด้วย Sector จำนวนมาก ซึ่งมีขนาดเท่ากับ 512 Byte

Platter = ส่วนของจานแม่เหล็กบนฮาร์ดดิสก์สามารถบันทึกข้อมูลได้ทั้งสองด้าน ด้านหน้าและด้านหลัง
track = ประกอบด้วย Sector จำนวนมาก ซึ่งมีขนาดเท่ากับ 512 Byte
sector = แทรกที่อยู่ตรงกันของแต่ละPlatter (แต่ละจาน)
cylinder = หัวสำหรับอ่าน/เขียนข้อมูลบนแพลตเตอร์
หลักการทำงานของHarddisk
การทำงานจะอาศัยการส่งกระแสไฟฟ้าเพื่อให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสนามแม่เหล็กโดยที่หัวอ่าน/เขียน จะไม่มีโอกาสสัมผัสกับผิวของแพลตเตอร์แต่อย่างใด เพื่อป้องกันการกระทบกับผิวของแพลตเตอร์ ซึ่งจะทำให้ข้อมูลบนแผ่นเสียหาย
