In my opinion, I don't think most of the characters in the book: Scarper Jack should have the endings they have received. For example; Henry Featherstone was murdered by his son (Richard Featherstone) because Richard was left thousands in Henry's will. Richard wasn't convicted of homicide, although his ending was not exactly pleasurable to imagine, as he died after being crushed under tons of red brick which had fallen from the rancid buildings a fair way above him.
Another ending to a character I didn't believe was satisfactory was Jack's father; Tony Tolchard. Tony had helped plan and succeed in the murder and was able to get away without anybody noticing, while his only child (Jack) was risking his life on the rotting buildings an estimated distance of around 200 meters above him. Is this fair on Jack or any of the other people who were in grave danger that night? Was that fair on Richard Featherstone and John Davis who were brutally killed? No, it's not. How come a character who was involved in a murder could escape while everyone else was left to deal with the situation?
A death I cannot decide whether it was fair or not is John Davis (mentioned in the paragraph above). The reason why I would take the side of the people who say it was fair that he was suffocated that night is because: John was the genuine murderer of Henry Featherstone. He killed him, but only because he was paid too. I appreciate that some people may disagree with me and that is perfectly fine. I believe that John was in a money dilemma and only proceeded with the murder because he was in desperate need.
One of the only characters endings I absolutely agreed with was Jack Tolchards. Jack was at the young age of 11 (verging on 12) when he was cleaning the chimney and incidentally found out about the malicious murder plot being hatched in the neighboring house. After Jack had identified that the murder was taking place, he did all in his power to find who was being murdered and where it was taking place. I believe the character, Jack Tolchard deserved his happy ending living with the Jeavons.
