Identifying an Authorization Hold:
When will our Payment Gateway authorize a card? There are three separate times at which Uber will verify a payment method and place an authorization hold:
- At sign up - when the user first adds a payment method to their account.
- When a user attempts to add a new card to their account.
- Pre-trip (typically only if the selected payment method/card hasn’t been validated for more than three days)
What will an authorization hold look like?
- Authorization holds may be in the amount of the upfront fare, minimum fare, a whole dollar amount, or other amount
- If a ride requested and canceled immediately, it’s possible to have an authorization hold for a trip with no trip history
- Regardless of the amount, authorization holds will appear as voided transactions in Braintree
- Authorization holds may tip off a user to an unauthorized use of their payment method
