1. Satelit astronomi : satelit yang digunakan untuk mengamati planet, galaksi, dan objek angkasa lainnya yang jauh.
contoh : satelit hubble yang di luncurkan pada tahun 1990 yang digunakan untuk memotret rose nebula
2. satelit komunikasi : satelit buatan yang dipasang di angkasa dengan tujuan telekomunikasi menggunakan radio pada frekuensi gelombang mikro.
contoh : satelit televisi dan informasi pertama, satelit telstar 1 di tahun 1964
3. satelit pengamat bumi : satelit yang dirancang khusus untuk mengamati Bumi dari orbit, tetapi ditujukan untuk penggunaan non-militer seperti pengamatan lingkungan, meteorologi, pembuatan peta, dll.
contoh : satelit LANDSAT yang digunakan untuk mengamati permukaan bumi
4. satelit navigasi : satelit yang menggunakan sinyal radio yang disalurkan ke penerima di permukaan tanah untuk menentukan lokasi sebuah titik dipermukaan bumi.
contoh : GPS milik Amerika Serikat, dan Glonass milik Rusia
5. satelit mata - mata : satelit pengamat Bumi atau satelit komunikasi yang digunakan untuk tujuan militer atau mata-mata.
contoh : satelit pendukung pertahanan (DSP) yang digunakan untuk memberi peringatan awal dalam peluncuran rudal.
6. satelit tenaga surya : satelit yang diusulkan dibuat di orbit Bumi tinggi yang menggunakan transmisi tenaga gelombang mikro untuk menyorotkan tenaga surya kepada antena sangat besar di Bumi yang dapat digunakan untuk menggantikan sumber tenaga konvensional.
contoh : satelit ikaros buatan jepang.
7. satelit cuaca : satelit yang diguanakan untuk mengamati cuaca dan iklim Bumi.
contoh : satelit cuaca pertama yang diterbangkan oleh NASA, TIROS 1 yang diterbangkan tahun 1960.
