What made Undertale successful?
Though its graphics are a bit outdated, its massively-immersive story and its astounding soundtrack are the most remarkable aspects in the game's success. The game toys with the player's emotions, forcing them to make decisions that will change the story. There are three standard endings for this game - the neutral route, where the player kills only a handful of NPCs in self-defence, the pacifist route, where the player decides to show mercy and spare all NPCs, and the genocide route, where the player traverses the underground as a murderous psychopath and kill every NPC, similar to the style of traditional RPGs. The story is so powerful that I cried during a pivotal point in the game. Not only is the story enticing, but the incredible soundtrack reinforces it.
