Departemen Permainan dan Olahraga Sihir membatasi jumlah pertandingan setiap tahunnya, agar dunia sihir tetap menjadi rahasia dari muggle. Meski begitu, pertandingan-pertandingan amatir diizinkan dilakukan sepanjang mengikuti pedoman yang tepat.
Akhirnya, sejak tahun 1674, ketika Liga diselenggarakan, tim Quidditch professional dibatasi jumlahnya. Hanya 13 tim terbaik yang terpilih. Lalu sisanya? Tim-tim tersebut diminta untuk membubarkan diri sedangkan ke-13 tim bersaing setiap tahun untuk memperebutkan Piala Liga.

Tim paling sukses dalam sejarah Liga Inggris dan Irlandia adalah Montrose Magpies. Mereka telah menang tiga puluh dua kali.
Di posisi kedua ada Ballycastle Bats yang telah memenangkan Liga dengan total kemenangan sebanyak dua puluh tujuh kali sampai sekarang.
Di posisi ketiga Puddlemere United. Tim paling tua di Liga.
Setelah itu ada Chudley Cannons dengan 21 kemenangan, diikuti oleh Caerphilly Catapults yang telah menang sebanyak 18 kali.
Wimbourne Wasps juga pernah memenangkan liga sebanyak 18 kali, meski memiliki seeker yang bertalenta dan memecahkan record menangkap snitch tercepat sepanjang sejarah, Tutshill Tornados hanya memenangkan total 5 pertandingan saja. 5 kemenangan itu pun berturut-turut.
Kalau Tutshill Tornados punya seeker hebat mereka, bernama Roderick Plumpton. Puddlemere United juga memecah record oleh chaser mereka.
Joscelind Wadcock, seorang Chaser Puddlemere United, tercatat sebagai chaser yang berhasil mencetak gol terbanyak selama abad 20.
