Pada tahun 1881, penjelajah Jerman bernama Carl Liche menulis tentang pengorbanan yang dilakukan oleh suku Mkodo di Madagaskar.
Ia melihat ritual pengorbanan tersebut dengan penjabaran rinci. Awalnya bermula ketika ia bersama suku tersebut menjelajah hutan lalu berhenti di suatu tanah lapang, dan melihat tumbuhan setinggi 8 kaki berpenampilan seperti pohon nanas. Pohon besar itu mempunyai daun yang menjuntai dari ujung pohon sampai ke permukaan tanah.
Selanjutnya, mereka menyiapkan wanita (sebagai tumbal) yang sebelum ditumbalkan, meminum suatu cairan dari pohon tersebut, lalu menjadi menggila dan tak terkendali. Suku Mkodo ini refleks memanjatkan doa doa dan nyanyian, dan si pohon tiba tiba 'hidup' sulur pohon nya bergerak gerak dan mulai melilit si wanita hingga tercekik lalu memakannya.
Dan dilain waktu, Liche mengunjungi pohon ini lagi dan disekitar pohon tersebut ditemukan tulang belulang hewan disekitar pohon itu.
