Good afternoon. Today, my group members and I will be sharing with you on our Game Design for our third assignment.

So, firstly in our assignment, we listed down thirty-four games that we know and have played. We shortlisted some games and at the end, we have eight games for our ideation. We decided to combine two games together, to make things easier for us. And so, we assigned numbers for the eight games and used a random number generator to pick two numbers for us and we would try to brainstorm on the two games that correspond to the picked numbers. We had some silly matches but there was one match in particular which we agreed on.

For the sake of those who still have no idea what Undertale is, despite our previous presentation, or if you’ve forgotten…

Basically, Undertale is a Role-playing Game made by Toby Fox which features unique game mechanics that makes the game special as compared to any other traditional Role-playing games. First started when Toby Fox wanted to test his skills in creating a game, Undertale, a game that took three years to make and has achieved tremendous support during its early development stages in a Kickstarter campaign, has achieved flawless success. Despite it being a simple, yet ambitious game, Undertale was picked by out members due to its immeasurable positivity.

Undertale’s combat system is called a ‘Turn-based Bullet-hell’. What it means is that harmful things appear in this box and whenever they touch the player, represented as a heart, the player will take damage. There is also platforming in this game, too, but it’s rarely occurred.

Alright, so, MapleStory is a free-to-play, which means there are purchasable content available in the game, 2D side-scrolling MMORPG extravaganza. It was first developed by Wizet, a South Korean company and till this date, there are several versions of the game for specific countries and regions. For example, in Europe, MapleStory was published by Nexon. The first version of the game, by Wizet, was released online on the 29th of April 2003. MapleStory’s player-base consists of approximately Twelve Million players. We picked this game due to its enticing quests, charms, nostalgia and excellent soundtrack.

Alright, firstly, due to Undertale’s multiple endings affected by the player’s choices, fighting and defeating opponents is not necessary, making it a special game.

Yeah, but, it is not as great as spamming one button every time you encounter an enemy, right? MapleStory’s hacking and slashing mechanic gives the fingers of the player a healthy workout.

Okay, fair enough. But, Undertale’s overworld as well as its combat interface are from a top-down perspective, giving a sense of nostalgia to classic RPG fans.

Undertale has only one story, but, with the player’s choices in the game, the story will expand, creating multiple timelines with it.

Pfft, who likes being forced to read a story? MapleStory has quests that players can play if they choose to, providing higher play value with the many different stories, worlds and opponents.

Alright, more boring things to do in your game, huh? Undertale’s friendly and casual gameplay makes the player take a backseat and enjoy the story.

A casual game? BORING.. MapleStory’s competitive background allow players to be actively participating in the game to earn rewarding loot and is guaranteed to make players stay at the edges of their seats.

Anyways, Undertale has cleverly hidden places and entities, easter eggs, not only in the game itself, but in its game files, too. That’s some food for thought, comrade.

From MapleStory, we implemented the side-scrolling feature into MapleTale. MapleStory’s side-scrolling does not only make creating MapleTale’s overworld easier, but it makes jumping, climbing and falling possible in-game. Physics and platforming are possible, too, which can enhance the game.
