In the grocery store, rates and unit rates are used to determine the better value of two potential options. How exactly is unit rate and rate used in the grocery store? Unit rate and rate are used by determining the price of a singular item that's labeled at a price for multiple items. Look at this picture for example, For 78 items the price is $5.99. As for the other option, it’s 56 items for $4.99. But when we take a look at the unit price, it’s 8 cents for the one that has 78 items and 9 cents for the one with 56 items. By determining the unit rate, it turns out 78 items for $5.99 is the better deal since the unit price is lower and you’d be buying more items for a worthy cost rather than the other option in which you’d be buying less items for a non worthy cost.

In this problem we have two offers. Martins special which is 8 cans of green beans for 96 cents. We also have Krogers special which is 17 cans for $1.36 First, we must determine the unit rate of both deals. For Martin's special, we must divide 8 from 96 and we get 12. So 12 cents is the unit price for one can of green beans in Martin's special. In Krogers special, we do 1.36 divided by 17 and we get 8. So our unit price for one can of green beans in martin's special is 8 cents. If we compare those two values 8 cents has a smaller value than 12 cents therefore Krogers special is the better deal because it's less money for more items.
