Railway Network
Rail lines (total route-km) in India was last measured at 63,974 in 2011, according to the World Bank. Rail lines are the length of railway route available for train service, irrespective of the number of parallel tracks.

Indian Railway is world’s 4th largest railway network comprising 115,000 km operating at least 14,444 trains daily.

India’s rail network is the most heavily used system in the world, transporting 8224 million passengers and over 969 million tons (Approximately 3 times of the total human population in the world) of freight annually, as of 2012.

Road Network
India has a road network of over 4,689,842 kilo meters (2,914,133 mi) in 2013, the second largest road network in the world after United States and more than 12 times the distance between earth and moon. It includes 79,116 km of national highways and expressways, 155,716 km of state highways, and 4,455,010 km of other roads.

At present there are 23 expressways in India including ones which are under construction and if all goes according to the plans, around 18,637 kms more expressways will be added to the Indian Road Network by the year 2022.

Waterways
As per the data collected in 2012, India comprises of 14,500 km of water ways, 9th largest in the world. (5,200 km on major rivers and 485 km on canals suitable for mechanized vessels).

Air Transport
India stand at 21st place in the world in terms of number of airports. A total of 346 (2013) airports including 253 pawed runway and 93 unpaved runway airports. 19 International Airports, 7 Customs Airports, 97 Domestic Airports and 22 civil enclaves included. There are 45 heliports in India as of 2013.

Pipelines

Ports
India has 12 major and 187 minor and intermediate ports along its more than 7500 km long coastline. There are also plans for $60 billion to be invested in India’s ports by 2020.

Major seaports include Chennai, Kolkata (Calcutta), Pradip, Ennore, V.O. Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Manglore, Mumbai (Bombay), Mormugao, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Kandla and Vishakhapatnam

Approximately 47,901,000 tons of traffic was handled at these 12 major ports in December 2013.

Dams
There are 5192 dams in India as of 13/2/2012 out of which 4845 are completed dams while 347 are under construction. As per NRLD, there are 61 completed and 10 under construction dams in India in the category of “Dams of National Importance”. Dams of National Importance are such dams with height 100 meter and above or gross storage capacity of 1 billion cubic meter and above.

Power
India has a total installed capacity of 2,28,721.73 Mega Watt of power as on 30th September 2013 from all sources including thermal (Coal, Gas, Oil), hydro power, nuclear and renewable energy sources. India has the 5th largest electricity generation capacity in the world with transmission and distribution network of 5.7 million circuit km the 3rd largest in the world.

20 Nuclear Power Reactors in operation in six nuclear power plants in India with a total capacity of 5780 MW as of January 2014. There are 3 nuclear power plants of capacity to produce 4800 MW of power and to be operational by December 2016.
