Psychotria Elata
Psychotria elata adalah jenis tumbuhan yang tumbuh di wilayah Kolombia, Kosta Rika, Panama, dan Ekuador. Spesies ini, karena bentuk bunganya yang menyerupai bibir, disebut Hooker's Lips atau Hot Lips Plants.
Mengapa bentuk bunga spesies itu begitu aneh? Ternyata, motifnya sama seperti umumnya tumbuhan. Psychotria elata mengembangkan bunga indah untuk menarik kupu-kupu dan burung agar mau membantu penyerbukan bunganya.
Sebenarnya bentuk merekah yang merah itu adalah daun kecil pada bunga, bukan bunga itu sendiri.
Sayangnya bentuk menyerupai bibir ini hanya bertahan sebentar ketika bunga belum jadi. Saat mekar daun kecilnya akan ikut merekah sehingga tidak lagi rapat membentuk bibir.
Psychotria elata ternyata tak punya nasib yang sama baik. Karena penggundulan hutan yang terjadi di negara-negara tempatnya tumbuh, populasinya terus terancam. Spesies ini perlu diselamatkan.
Hutan, termasuk hutan di Indonesia, menyimpan begitu banyak spesies berharga dan unik. Menjaga kelestarian hutan berarti menjaga keberadaan spesies-spesies menawan, termasuk spesies yang belum ditemukan.
