In "The sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", Jonathan Edwards uses imagery and powerful language to achieve his purpose. For example, he wrote "Consider the fearful danger you are in: it is a great furnace of wrath, a widen and bottomless pit, full of the fire of wrath, that you are held over in the hand of that God, whose wrath is provoked and incensed as much against you, as against many if the damned in hell." The author repeatedly using the word "wrath" instead of "anger". This is author's purpose to emphasize the extreme anger. The way he used "wrath" has created rhetorical effect. Another example is "The world of misery, the lake of burning brimstone, is extended abroad, under you. There is a dreadful pit of glowing flames of the wrath of God". In this description, Edwards used powerful words to create grim tone. Jonathan Edwards has used diction for his purpose in "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God".
