First Aid adalah pertolongan pertama yang harus segera diberikan kepada korban yang mendapatkan kecelakaan/penyakit mendadak dengan cepat dan tepat sebelum korban dibawa ke tempat rujukan yaitu Rumah Sakit untuk ditangani oleh tenaga medis yang sudah ahli.
Dari pengertian diatas dapat diambil 2 kesimpulan mengenai tindakan yang harus dilakukan.
Satu, pertolongan pertama kepada korban harus diberikan secara cepat. Akan tetapi hal ini hanya berlaku untuk seberapa parah luka yang diderita oleh korban itu sendiri. Karena apabila kita terlalu lambat barang sedetikpun, kematian bisa saja terjadi.
Kedua, pertolongan pertama harus tepat sesuai dengan luka yang diderita oleh korban. Hal ini dilakukan agar pertolongan tersebut sesuai dengan tujuan First Aid itu sendiri, yaitu dapat meringankan sakit yang diderita oleh korban.
