Quantum mottle - Principle contributor to image noise. Random in nature. *THE ONLY* contributing factor to image noise that the radiographer has some influence over. CAUSE: lack of enough incoming x-ray photons reaching the image receptor, therefore "pieces" of information that were needed to form a complete and quality image are missing.
Film Graininess - Caused by Silver Halide Crystals. It is inherent ("permanent") to a film/screen image receptor and is a function of the distribution of the size and spacing of the elements that create emulsion.
Structure Mottle - Caused by Intensifying screen. Similar to film graininess, but refers to the intensifying phosphors.
Film Graininess and Structure Mottle are inherent factors of the manufacture of film and screen to which the radiographer HAS NO CONTROL OVER. - Appearance on radiograph: image looks grainy and underexposed. Can occur with both film/screen systems and computer based systems.
