The Enigma Cipher machine was made in Germany after WW1 (world war 1). It was used by the German army, so that they could talk/communicate securely and wirelessly. It was used until the end of WW2 (world war 2). There were multiple types of the machine made, each with a harder/more complex code to break. The most complex/hardest Enigma code was used by the German Navy.

In WW2 there were a lot of investigations about The Allies knowing how to break the Enigma code, but the Germans came to the conclusion that The Allies didn't know how to break it (but they actually did).

To use the enigma machine, you had to set the settings to a combination which was known by the sender and the person he was sending it to. Then he typed the text he wanted on the keyboard, and it would come out as Enigma code. It was then transmitted with a morse code radio transmitter.
