“A pen is mightier than a sword.” The story Sucker shows that words can hurt and that they won’t heal.Showing this from one of the main Sukcer going from a gullible little kid to a teenager who doesn’t really care about others by his cousin.Three ways this is shown is through foreshadowing,irony and conflict.
Thourgh the story Sucker is having some kind of conflict with Pete.For example “If a person admires you a lot you despise him and don't care-and it is the person who doesn't notice you that you are apt to admire”(McCullers,69) Whenever something bad happens to Pete he’ll take his anger out on Sucker and not feel bad.Sucker meanwhile feels betrayed as someone who he thought he had someone he could count on.After their fight,Sucker joins a gang which the people in the gang become people he can trust.After this change,Pete and Sucker are so at odds with each other that they don’t talk to each other.It even gets to the point where Pete can’t be in the same room as him without feeling uncomfortable.
In the beginning of the story Sucker was a somewhat guest in Pete room.An example would be if Pete ever had friends over,all he had to was look at Sucker and he would stop what he was doing and leave without a word.However now he’s the one that owns that room.For example outside the it says "Woe to the Outsider who Enters" (71) in Mercurochrome which is used for small cuts.Another thing is that now Pete can’t call him Sucker anymore becuase he isn’t the sucker anymore.
Throughout the story Pete says things like “Sucker changed so much it's hard to remember him as he use to be”or “If I could have seen ahead maybe I would have acted different.” This implements that Sukcer is a very different person now than he was before.It also states that because of Pete Sucker is this way now.Another thing to note is that now every Sucker looks at Pete “Sometimes this look in his eyes almost makes me believe that if Sucker could he would kill me.” (McCullers,71)
