In the past, many famous peacemakers have constantly stated that we cannot use violent ways to stop the violence and have shunned the eye for an eye saying. Like Gandhi and Martin Luthor King Jr. taught, revenge is not the way to go. Even in the bible, Jesus tells us an eye for an eye isn’t necessary . But when we have a punishment based on a life for a life, we won’t get any closer to peace.
Journalist John Grogan also said, ‘’We can't kill the killers without becoming killers ourselves.’’
We are losing the moral high ground when we declare life sacred and then start making exceptions. When we use the death penalty, we sending the message that the taking of a life is okay.We are just making it easier for more to kill with the death penalty as a form of punishment.
We, the members of a civilized society, can't have it both ways. When we do, we lose the moral high ground. Life has been cheapened; murder can be justified, rationalized. We can't fight barbarity with barbarity; can't meet atrocity with atrocity. It might feel good for the moment, but in the end, we will lose. We will wake up one day and see that we have become the very thing we set out to eliminate.

‘’the United States is one of the leading countries in numbers of state-sanctioned murders.’’
We aren’t bringing anyone back to life by condemning others to death. We are only adding to those dead.
