Asam amino merupakan unit terkecil dari peptida atau protein. Peptida atau protein merupakan penyusun sel-sel jaringan, sehingga asam amino berperan penting sebagai penyusun sel-sel jaringan. Contoh dan fungsi Peptida

* Piroglutamilhistidilprolinamida
Hormon ini berasal dari kelenjar hipotalamus sapi yang bila disuntikkan tubuh manusia akan mereangsang pengeluaran hormon-hormon tiroid yang berperan mengatur metabolisme dalam tubuh.
* Glutatium (Glutamilsisteilglisin)
Tripeptida ini terdapat pada semua bentuk kehidupan yang berperan pada sintesis hormon insulin di dalam kelenjar pankreas agar insulin hasil sintesis ini ikatan-ikatannya tepat sehingga akan bekerja sesuai fungsinya.
* Oksitosin
Hormon ini dapat menyebabkan kontraksi uterus (rahim) selama melahirkan bayi agar bayi mudah keluar.
* Insulin
Merupakan polipeptida yang dihasilkan (disekresikan) oleh kelenjar pankreas dalam tubuh. Insulin berperan menurunkan kadar gula dalam darah apabila kadarnya meningkat. Orang yang mengidap diabetes, biasanya disuntikkan insulin untuk menurunkan gula darahnya.
