Between 1846 and 1868, thousands of Mormons moved from Nauvoo, Illinois, to their new home in SaltLake City, Utah. They packed up their families, belongings, and memories of friends, and embarkedon a journey across the United States. Their belief in one man and a new religion kept themfocused and anxious to settle in their new home. Today, there are about 4.5 million Mormons in the Joseph Smith
Joseph Smith established the Mormon religion, or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in 1831. The Mormons first based their headquarters in Ohio but were forced to move to Missouri in 1838 and 1839 because of religious prejudice. They then moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, where many converts from all over the world gathered.
In 1844, Joseph Smith and his brother were killed by a mob in a religious dispute. After this event, the Mormons decided they needed to leave Illinois and find another place to settle. The Mormons started the long and dangerous journey to their current home of Salt Lake City, Utah.
