"I'm not like you guys" adalah salah satu ungkapan yang sering dan menjadi motto hidup seorang calaeb prior.
Selama bertahun-tahun, ia bertindak sebagai penyangkalan sejati (membantu tanpa pamrih) , selalu siap untuk melayani orang lain bila perlu.
Tanpa diketahui keluarganya pada saat itu, Caleb adalah seseorang yang sangat ingin tahu dan gemar membaca buku ia bersifat suatu Erudite. Berbeda, atau alias divergent.
Rahasia ini akhirnya terungkap pada hari Upacara pemilihan, di mana ia memilih Erudite sebagai fraksinya. Penyebab ia masuk erudite adalah karena penasaran (kepo).
Sebelum Upacara Memilih, Caleb memberi petunjuk untuk adiknya, Beatrice, bahwa dia memiliki pilihan untuk meninggalkan fraksi Abnegation.
Pada hari memilih, ia dan Beatrice memilih meninggalkan keluarga mereka untuk fraksi yang berbeda. Dia kemudian menjadi Erudite.
Kemudian, dia dikunjungi oleh Beatrice, yang mengubah namanya setelah bergabung faksi Dauntless.
Nama adiknya adalah Tris Prior, ia bertemu Tris di kompleks Erudite yang diperintahkan oleh ibu mereka untuk menyelidiki serum simulasi yang dibuat oleh Jeanine Matthews.
Pada saat itu Jeanine Matthews memiliki jabatan sebagai kepala fraksi erudite.
