Betweeb 1916-1918 about 500 Blacks left the south every day to find a new life in the urban areas to the north. Cotton had been the Country's staple. 1860 cotton made up 50 percent of US exports. Rebirth of African American music, art, and literature. This invigoration would eventually lead to a movement called the Harlem Renaissance, which took place from about 1910 to 1935. Harlem is an area in New York City, and in 1904, middle class African Americans began buying and renting property there. 1910-1920 Population in Harlem doubled. Langston Hughes was a poet, Zora Naele Hurston was a novelist and Painters such as Laura Wheeler Warling all became part of the active artistry of the area. National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was started here in 1909. In 1910, what would become the National Urban League was also founded. The Great Migration served as a key changemaker on many fronts, from the artistic to the cultural to the social to the political.
