The story "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, is about a woman who is suffering from post pardem depression in the late 1800's. Her husband John, takes her to a secluded Victorian mansion in hopes of curing her depression. In the beginning of the short story, the woman is allowed visits from her maid and allowed to read and write of sorts, but as the story progresses, she is not allowed to have any social interaction, let alone mind stimulating hobbies. This story demonstrates how Psychology in the 1800's, was not understood enough.
John, the woman's husband, was a well known Physician. As was his brother. But no matter how many times she tells her husband about her depression, he does not believe her, and just shrugs it off as a type of hysteria that can be cured with tonics and rest. After a while of not getting better, she was placed on rest. The previous theme relates back to this because he didn't know to look further into what was wrong, nor did he take it as seriously as he should have. He assigned her to rest before
