-Keystone Species
Definition: A species on which other species in an ecosystem largely depend, such that if it were removed the ecosystem would change dramatically
explain role
An example of a keystone species is a sea otter. The role of the sea otter is to feed on the sea urchins that would
otherwise eat the kelp of the habitat. Without sea otters, giant kelp ecosystems would collapse due to the sea urchins eating all the kelp and reduce aquatic diversity
-Invasive Species
A non-native species to the region which when introduced, causes environmental or economic harm
An example of invasive species is the zebra mussle. They were accidently brought into the United States on boats. They are an invasive species because they outcompete the native filter-feeding organisms for food, resulting in environmental harm.
Zebra mussles cause economic harm by clogging up pipes that are used to transport water because they form colonies in the pipes.
