Tanaman yang memiliki nama panjang Welwitschia Mirabilis ini, berasal dari tempat yang sangat kering, yaitu Namibia (Sebuah Negara dari Afrika dan Negara ini lebih tepatnya di pesisir Atlantik).
Welcitschia memiliki beberapa nama. Salah satunya adalah nama Afrikanya, yaitu tweeblaarkanniedood.
Kebanyakan sumber menyebut tanaman ini adalah fosil hidup. Disebut seperti itu karena Welwitschia adalah tumbuhan yang hampir punah. Kira-kira, Welwitschia sudah hidup sangat lama.
Sebelum manusia jaman sekarang lahir dan, dia bisa bertahan hidup selama itu. Bahkan ada yang sudah layu tapi masih hidup.
Tanaman Welwitschia ini adalah tanaman tangguh yang berasal dari Namibia. Kenapa tangguh? Karena tanaman ini sudah hampir punah dan hidupnya sudah sangat lama.
Tanaman ini tidak akan lebih tinggi dari 2 meter dan batangnya akan terus membesar lalu menebal. Dan lebarnya bisa 8 meter. Kalau kita bertemu orang asli dari namibia, kita bisa menyebut tanaman ini dengan nama Onyanga. Disebut Onyanga karena menurut mereka tanaman ini adalag bawang padang pasir. Dan tentu saja bisa diolah menjadi bahan makanan.
