I. Introduction

The coach had noticed that the whole team's performance had increased immensely and was wondering what had caused this change. As all the athletes at this college started to get paid, all the athletes had been practicing harder and were putting more hours into their play. College athletes have never been paid before, but if they did their play and performance would increase as they would be practicing harder to get a spot on the starter rotation.People believe that if these athletes got paid that they would start to slack off in their school work, because they would be so focused on winning and getting paid more.With these athletes earning money, they would begin to learn how to be responsible with money. College athletes should be paid to play, because it would change their lives throughout college and after college.

II. Counterclaim

A. With athletes getting paid, they would would be less motivated to play, because they could get injured and would start slacking in their performance and school work.

B. Coaches have the power to bench the players if they aren't playing to the level that they are expected to and could bench these athletes if needed.

C. Some of the athletes at colleges are already getting scholarships and would be really easy for them to pay off their tuition.

D.If a college athlete did get paid and one of the athlete had a scholarship, they could make an agreement so that the athlete could only make so much since he's on a scholarship and would be unfair to everyone else.

III. Claim

A. "Around 60% of NBA players are broke within five years of retirement" states Tiffany Patterson.

B. That is an enormous number and if these athletes got paid it could prepare these athletes to have a more successful life and be wise around the way they spent their money.

C. Many athletes are practicing everyday on the fields and working as hard as they can to get a spot on the starting roster, if one of these athletes got injured and couldn't play it would be a tragedy.

D. Injury's can be a big deal and some can take as long as two years to recover or may never heal. If a college athlete got injured and could never play again it would change everything in their life because they would have to look for another profession and might not be able to recover all the time they spent into their sport.

IV. Conlusion

College athletes work extremely hard and dedicate their lives into the sport their playing, getting paid would change the athletes life permanently. Preparing young adults for the real life can be hard, but it could be easier with this athletes getting paid since they would learn how to spend their money wisely on things they needed and would be smarter on how they invested into things. Athletes would also improve because if their on the bench, they would earn less than the starters and the money would motivate them. Coaches have all the power and can bench any athlete at any time if they start to show that they were slacking and would make these athletes better overall and be even better if they did become professionals in their sport.
