Explain relations of ideas and matters of fact. How do we come to know about cause and effect, according to Hume (use an example to demonstrate your answer)? What is Locke’s definition of a person? How does Locke account for the identity of a person over time? How does Locke’s account deal with the problem associated with the resurrection (say what the problem is)? What implications of Locke’s account of personhood might be objectionable and why? What is Cavendish’s account of persons? How does Cavendish deal with the possibility of the resurrection? What is a potential difficulty with her account, and who could she solve it?
Previously Locke had simplistic view of defining person. Locke believed a person is body and soul. However, Locke changed his definition of person. Locke defined person as, ‘a thinking intelligent being that has reason and reflection and can consider itself as a self. The same thing across space and time by means of consciousness.’ Furthermore, he questioned, how an identity becomes the identity self? Neither objective bodies and thoughts can be identified as an individual identity, because we, as a human, have not witness a soul. Since the soul is formless and does not take any space, all human possibly have same soul but different bodies. Therefore, a being itself does not define the identity of individual self. The memories of conscious living identity determine an individual.
it is not a being. It is of mind itself, in other word, the state of each continuous events that defines a person. The body that takes place is not really a person.
