Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all. - Sam Ewig

Its true if you don't show up to something then people will think that you don't care enough to show up. The meaning some turn up their sleeves means to prepare for hard work. That they know what they are supposed to be doing and they are going to get it done. And to turn up their noses is to not accept something because you do not think it is good enough for you, to say like um no I'm not doing that. And the meaning of some don't turn up at all is what it says, they just don't care enough to show up. So I'm going to give an example, once when I was at school we were doing a project on a book we were read, and our teacher had assigned us groups to do the project with. And everyone in the group were supposed to present the project when we were done and the boy said that he was not going to present because he did not like it and he didn't want his friends to make fun of him. So the point of this story is that everyone in they group besides the boy turned up their sleeves and were ready to work with the boy turned up his nose and decided he didn't want to do the presentation.
