Definisi Harga Diri menurut Santrock, salah satu tokoh dalam Psikologi Sosial pada tahun 2003 :
"Harga diri adalah dimensi evaluatif yang menyeluruh dari diri. Contohnya ada seorang remaja dapat mengerti bahwa ia tidak hanya seseorang, tetapi juga memiliki pandangan bahwa ia orang yang baik.
Harga diri menyangkut tiga aspek.
1. Kelas sosial
2. Agama
3. Riwayat pekerjaan orang tua."
Harga diri tentunya mempunyai karakteristik pengasuhan.
1. Self esteem dari stabilitas ibu
2. Peran pengasuhan dari ayah
3. Perilaku peran pengasuhan
4. Interaksi ayah dan ibu
Keempat hal ini sangat mempengaruhi harga diri yang kita bentuk.
Karakteristik berikutnya yaitu karakteristik subjek.
1. Atribut fisik
2. Kemampuan umum
3. Masalah dan penyakit
4. Aspirasi

Self esteem adalah penilaian individu terhadap hasil yang dicapai dengan menganalisa seberapa jauh perilaku memenuhi ideal dirinya.
Di harga diri ini, self esteem yang digunakan berasal dari stabilitas ibu. Ibu yang memiliki self esteem tinggi cenderung memiliki anak yang self esteemya tinggi.
Agar mudah, saya jelaskan garis besarnya melalui contoh.
Jika kalian mempunyai ibu yang tenang (emosi rendah), maka kalian tidak akan mudah merasa bingung atau panik. Sedangkan ibu dengan self esteem rendah (emosi tinggi) akan tercermin kepada sang anak. Akibat ibu mempunyai emosi tidak stabil, anaknya tidak bisa memandang dirinya sendiri melalui penilaian positif.
