Алыча растет в виде дерева высотой до 15 м или кустарника. Деревья хорошо облиственные, часто покрыты шипами. Побеги тонкие, красноватые, неопушенные. Листья средней величины, удлиненно-яйцевидные, к вершине заостренные, без опушения.
Алыча отличается коротким периодом покоя, ранним, нередко растянутым цветением. Цветки распускаются раньше листьев. По зимостойкости алыча уступает сливе домашней. На юге страны она используется в качестве подвоя для сливы, алычи и персика.
Плоды бывают округлые, овальные, яйцевидные; от светло-желтых до темно-красных и черных; косточка чаще всего сросшаяся с мякотью.
Благодаря своеобразному сочетанию сахара, кислоты, пектиновых и других веществ плоды алычи способствуют усвоению организмом пищи.
Встречается главным образом в южных районах нашей страны. За последние 20 лет селекционерами России и Белоруссии созданы зимостойкие сорта алычи, позволившие выращивать эту культуру в центральных районах страны.
