Railroad workers found the medal in 1899. It was put in a museum in 1901. In the 1930s, it went missing. But the museum found it in 2002.
The medal is 200 years old. Some Nez Perce want it back. They point to a 1990 law. It talks about things in Native American graves. These must go back to the tribes. The medal could be buried again. Or, it could go in a Nez Perce history museum.
Lewis and Clark were American explorers. They gave "Jefferson Peace Medals" to the Native Americans. This was important. Lewis and Clark needed the Native Americans' help. The gifts helped. They gave a message. They showed goodwill. But there was more to it. Americans believed that the medals showed Native Americans something. What was that? The U.S. planned to take over.
