This makes it easier for an AI to accomplish their task. The Facebook team believes that even if their AI isn't able to complete all tasks, it will still be useful. They say that they believe that they can move towards an AI that is effective without needing to be capable "to be successful at every task."
It is still difficult. Understanding ordinary language is one of the challenges. The Facebook team imagines this scenario:
PLAYER: construct a tower 15 blocks tall and then put a huge smiley on top ASSISTANT: ok
This fairly simple request requires a significant amount of knowledge. The person who assists must comprehend the concept of a "tower" and how to construct one, be aware that "15 blocks high" is a measurement of the height of the tower and also know what "15" is. Also, they must understand the term "smiley" and how to construct it, and understand what it means to place it "on the top." It's easy to imagine how these requests could get significantly more complex.
However the possibilities for an AI to learn are endless. If Facebook can get enough human assistance, the assistant could ask humans to help it learn.
And Facebook is committing itself to the task of creating the AI to self-improve. One of the most frequent criticisms of AI systems is that they don't develop new tasks beyond those which they have been taught and for which data is gathered and processed. However, researchers believe that the Minecraft environment is the perfect one to create this kind of learning.
It's an interesting piece of work that outlines an ambitious goal for Facebook. Of course, it is still early days. This work is described by the team as an "call for arms."
